Script always comes first for me: Ayushmann Khurrana

Mumbai, Oct 1 (UNI) Ayushmann Khurrana says the director’s experience matters less to him than the strength of the script and the vision behind the story when choosing a film.
For over a decade, Khurrana has been a part of films that challenge conventional thinking and give new directors an opportunity to express their creative voice. With the upcoming film "Udta Teer", he will complete a seven-film journey of working with debutant filmmakers or those making their directorial debut in Hindi cinema.
This streak began with Sharat Katariya in "Dum Laga Ke Haisha." He has since worked with R. S. Prasanna in "Shubh Mangal Savdhan," Raaj Shaandilyaa in "Dream Girl," Hitesh Kewalya in "Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan," Anubhuti Kashyap in "Doctor G," Aniruddha Iyer in "An Action Hero," and now Akash A. Kaushik in "Udta Teer."
The 42-year-old actor said, "For me, the script always comes first. I don't look at whether a filmmaker is directing their first film or their tenth. I look at whether they have a story and vision that excites me. Some of the most memorable experiences of my career have come from working with new people. They bring with them a hunger, freshness, and the courage to look at something familiar from a different perspective."
“When the belief behind a story is strong, it should be supported,” he said.
In "Udta Teer," Khurrana plays Bilal Ahmed, a Pakistani spy who, after losing his memory, begins to believe he's an Indian. Written and directed by Akash A. Kaushik, the film is a patriotic comedy. During the trailer launch, he described it as a "patriotic comedy," saying he follows the demands of the script and considers himself "the director's baby."
The actor said, "Every new director brings a different energy to the set. With 'Udta Teer,' I wasn't just drawn to the genre, but also the world that Aakash has created. It's rare to find a script that is chaotic, fun, emotional, and rooted in a big idea all at the same time."
The movie will hit the theatres on October 9, 2026.
