‘Lethal Weapon 5’ is taking long to get made, despite great script: Mel Gibson

Los Angeles, May 20 (UNI) ‘Lethal Weapon’ co-stars Danny Glover and Mel Gibson are back together again ahead of the long-anticipated fifth installment of the iconic action-buddy cop- comedy franchise.
However, despite a lot of fan interest, studio attempts, and a completed script, the project continues to be stuck in development hell.
Gibson, who is set to direct the fifth film after original director Richard Donner’s death in 2021 at the age of 91, explained why ‘Lethal Weapon 5’ is taking so long to get made, even though he believes the script could be the best of the entire series.
Speaking to Screen Rant about the constant delays, he said “I sat down with a writer and we did two or three drafts of screenplays and it came out pretty good. In fact, I think it’s the best of all of them.
“It’s a lot of fun and got really emotional. And for some reason, the studios are having a lot of problems. I don’t know what the deal is. I’m not sure what the problem is, but it is a really good screenplay.”
The ‘Lethal Weapon’ franchise, which began in 1987, follows the chaotic partnership between the reckless LAPD detective Martin Riggs (Gibson) who becomes suicidal after the death of his wife, and the calmer and more experienced detective Roger Murtaugh (Glover), who is forced to handle Riggs’ self-destructive behaviour.
The fourth and most recent film was released in 1998 to mixed reviews, so fans- young and old-alike have a keen interest in seeing the cop duo reunite, given the popularity of legacy sequels in Hollywood recently, evident with the success of films such as ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, ‘Creed’, the ‘Jurassic World’ franchise, and ‘Blade Runner: 2049’.
The last film in the series was released in 1998 and received very mixed reviews. Now that the two are back together again, fans of the franchise- young and old alike – are aching to see the iconic cop duo back together once more.
The fifth film has been in the works for years, with development gaining traction around 2020. However, the sudden passing of Donner at age 91 stalled progress. Warner Bros. confirmed Gibson would take the reins, but little movement has occurred since.
Gibson, whose directorial accolades include several highly acclaimed projects such ‘Braveheart’, ‘The Passion of the Christ’, ‘Apocalypto’, and ‘Hacksaw Bridge’ is more than qualified to handle the fifth film, though it seems the project is going to be on hold for quite some time, especially as Gibson has already announced his next directorial ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’.
