CBSE mobilises schools for nationwide cleanliness drive; one hr mass ‘Shramdaan’ on Oct 1

New Delhi, Sep 26 (UNI) The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked all its affiliated schools to mobilise students, teachers and communities for a nationwide cleanliness campaign, with a one-hour mass ‘Shramdaan’ on October 1 as one of the key activities under Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2026.
In a circular dated September 25, CBSE said the campaign will continue till October 2, culminating in Swachh Bharat Diwas. This year's theme is “Swachhata Mein Sahbhag; Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat”, with the campaign seeking greater public participation, the involvement of students and youth, and awareness of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
The nationwide “Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath” initiative is proposed for October 1, when people from different walks of life will be encouraged to contribute one hour of voluntary service for cleanliness. CBSE has asked schools to encourage maximum participation in the campaign.
Schools have been advised to organise cleanliness and beautification drives in and around their campuses, including shramdaan and plantation activities, with appropriate safety arrangements. Students, preferably from Classes VI to XII, may also be taken on exposure visits to solid and liquid-waste management facilities and other Swachh Bharat Mission assets.
The campaign extends beyond school campuses. One of its key focus areas is the identification, mapping and cleaning of difficult and dirty spots and high-footfall public places. Students and youth are also to be engaged through discussions, debates and conversations on cleanliness, rainwater harvesting and water management.
Schools have been encouraged to conduct awareness and demonstration activities on the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, and on four-way segregation of waste at the source. Other suggested subjects include personal hygiene, handwashing, safe toilets and drinking water, rainwater harvesting, wastewater management, preventing littering, and avoiding single-use plastics.
The Board has also placed emphasis on Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, encouraging donation drives for books, toys, clothes, shoes, and other reusable or recyclable materials. The wider SHS campaign includes “Kabaad se Jugaad” (Waste to Wealth) and “Kabaad se Kala” (Waste to Art) initiatives aimed at promoting a circular economy.
CBSE said the school campaign may be undertaken under the aegis of Eco Clubs for Mission Life. Schools where such clubs have not yet been constituted have been asked to take necessary action to establish them.
A quiz on the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, has also been hosted for students of Classes VI to XII, while schools have been asked to upload details of their participation and activities on the Eco Clubs for Mission LiFE portal.
The circular, signed by CBSE Director (Academics) Dr Praggya M. Singh, has been sent to heads of all CBSE-affiliated schools.
