Railways eyes smart waste-compactor bins at busy stations to curb overflowing litter

New Delhi, Sep 26 (UNI) The Railway Board has asked all zonal railways to consider deploying waste-compactor smart bins at high-footfall railway stations on an experimental basis, seeking a technology-driven solution to overflowing conventional bins and the resulting litter at busy stations.
In an order issued to general managers of all zonal railways, the Board said conventional litter bins at high-footfall stations frequently overflow because of their limited holding capacity, leading to littering and deterioration in cleanliness standards.
The Board noted that Indian Railways, being a Bulk Waste Generator under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, is required to ensure efficient management of solid waste.
Under the proposal, zonal railways may install waste-compactor smart bins at locations generating large volumes of dry waste. Their built-in compaction mechanism would reduce waste volume and increase effective holding capacity, thereby helping prevent overflow.
The September 16 order said the bins may also have advanced features such as solar-powered operation, fill-level monitoring sensors, automated alerts, touch-free operation and digital monitoring systems to improve waste-management efficiency.
The technology has already entered limited use within the railway establishment.
According to the Board, two smart waste-compactor bins are currently in use at the Railway Board canteen.
The Board, however, has not ordered an immediate network-wide rollout.
Zonal railways have instead been authorised to assess the technology according to local requirements and operational needs and deploy suitable smart bins experimentally.
The cost of such installations may be met from available funds under the Umbrella Work of Environment-related activities in Indian Railways, in accordance with existing rules and delegated financial powers.
Significantly, the Railway Board has asked zonal railways to monitor the performance and benefits of the installations, with the results expected to guide a decision on their wider adoption across Indian Railways.
The directive effectively opens the door for railway stations to move from conventional waste bins towards sensor-enabled and automated waste-management systems, particularly at locations where large volumes of dry waste put pressure on existing sanitation arrangements.
The order was issued by Amita Bhalla, Joint Director, Environment and Housekeeping Management (EnHM), Railway Board.
