“Gyanesh Will Go”: Venugopal Vows to Intensify Congress Campaign Against CEC

New Delhi, Sep 25 (UNI) Congress general secretary K C Venugopal on Friday intensified the party’s campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, declaring that “Gyanesh will go” and warning that the nationwide protests demanding his removal were only the beginning of a larger mobilisation over the functioning of the Election Commission.
“Gyanesh will go, it’s a matter of time. And then Congress will make it happen,” Venugopal said in a post on X as Congress leaders and workers staged demonstrations in several parts of the country demanding Kumar’s removal.
“The protests held by our leaders and workers across the country demanding his removal are just the beginning,” Venugopal said, calling for what he described as a “massive outpouring of the defenders of democracy” against attempts to undermine statutory institutions.
Urging citizens concerned about the electoral process to join the campaign, Venugopal said, “Every Indian who is even slightly concerned about saving our democracy should step out and mount unbelievable pressure on this regime and its puppets to fix accountability for this daylight robbery of our vote.”
“We must ensure those guilty are severely punished for destroying our democracy,” he added.
The Congress campaign comes amid an escalating confrontation with the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and reported differences within the three-member poll panel. An investigation by The Indian Express reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had formally recorded objections on at least 14 occasions over 10 months on issues involving electoral-roll procedures, voter additions and deletions, software and the functioning of the Commission.
The report said the objections included concerns over changes to Form 6 for new voters, access to electoral-roll databases and the handling of certain cases arising from the SIR exercise. The two Election Commissioners also questioned whether certain decisions had been taken without their knowledge or approval.
The Election Commission, however, has rejected the characterisation of the reported differences as evidence of a divided poll panel and has maintained that decisions of the Commission were taken unanimously.
The Congress had directed its Pradesh Congress Committees to organise protest marches to Election Commission offices in the respective states on September 25, demanding Kumar’s arrest and removal as well as an independent review of electoral-roll changes and decisions taken during his tenure. The party has also announced another round of demonstrations by District Congress Committees at district collectorates on September 28.
The protests on Friday saw Congress workers take to the streets in several cities, with demonstrations targeting the Election Commission and demands for Kumar’s resignation or removal. Reports from some locations said police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse protesters.
The confrontation has consequently widened beyond the SIR exercise itself, with the Congress questioning the functioning of the poll panel and demanding accountability over electoral-roll decisions. Venugopal’s latest remarks signal that the party intends to sustain the agitation, linking its campaign to its broader “vote chori” charge and making the removal of Kumar a central demand of its ongoing protests.
