Refusal to lend matchbox costs 30-year-old his life, leaving another injured; 3 accused held

New Delhi, Sep 16 (UNI) A dispute that began over a matchbox to light a cigarette turned fatal in northwest Delhi, leaving a 30-year-old man dead and another injured in a stabbing incident, police said on Wednesday.
The incident took place on Tuesday outside a government wine shop in Keshav Puram, where the victims, Bhawani and Asha Ram, reportedly got into an argument with three men after being asked for a matchbox.
According to police, the victims said they did not have one, following which an argument broke out. The accused allegedly assaulted the two men with fists before one of them attacked them with a knife, a senior police officer said.
Bhawani was taken to Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Police said he had suffered a deep stab wound to the left side of his back.
Asha Ram, 32, sustained a stab injury to his left lower chest and was undergoing treatment. He was declared unfit to record his statement, police said.
Officials have registered a case at Keshav Puram police station under Sections 103(1) (murder) and 109(1) (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police said technical surveillance and local intelligence helped them identify the suspects. Naresh Bahadur alias Nepali, 19, identified as the main accused, was apprehended along with Tarun, 19, and a juvenile, an official said in a statement.
“Naresh stabbed both victims with a knife, while Tarun and the juvenile assaulted them with fists,” the officer said, adding that the knife allegedly used in the attack was recovered at Naresh’s instance.
Further investigation is underway.
