Indian Coast Guard must rapidly adopt emerging technologies to tackle maritime security challenges: Seth

New Delhi, Sep 17 (UNI) Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth on Thursday called upon the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) to remain prepared for emerging maritime security challenges by rapidly adopting new technologies, including artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, cyber capabilities and space-based assets.
Addressing the opening day of the three-day 43rd Indian Coast Guard Commanders’ Conference in New Delhi, Seth said the changing character of warfare and security challenges required the force to strengthen its technological capabilities and operational effectiveness.
Seth interacted with ICG Director General Paramesh Sivamani and senior Coast Guard commanders during the conference, which is reviewing the force’s operational preparedness, capability development and infrastructure requirements.
The minister emphasised the growing importance of networks, sensors, software, data, AI, autonomous systems, cyber capabilities and space-based technologies in the contemporary security environment.
He said the Coast Guard should not remain merely a user of emerging technologies but should become a “co-creator” by working closely with start-ups, industry, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and research institutions.
“Aatmanirbharta is not merely about buying Indian; it is about developing solutions for Indian challenges and creating capabilities that can meet global requirements. This embodies our vision of ‘Make in India, Make of World’,” Seth said.
He also commended the ICG for safeguarding India’s maritime interests, strengthening coastal security and acting as a first responder during emergencies at sea.
He particularly highlighted its role in saving lives irrespective of the nationality of persons in distress.
The Minister underlined the Coast Guard’s expanding role in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, noting that capabilities developed for maritime security also support search and rescue, medical evacuation, disaster response and pollution control.
Seth called for strengthening India’s maritime capabilities across the spectrum, from littoral and green waters to open oceans and blue waters, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions).
He stressed the need for advanced platforms, underwater technologies, unmanned systems, long-endurance surveillance capabilities, satellite-enabled maritime domain awareness and secure communications. “As India’s maritime responsibilities expand, our capabilities must expand with them, from our coasts to the wider maritime domain,” he said.
The Coast Guard commanders will also interact with Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani and Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan during the conference, with discussions aimed at strengthening inter-service coordination across the maritime security spectrum.
The three-day conference provides a platform for the ICG leadership to review operational preparedness, material and logistical support, human resource development, training and administrative initiatives undertaken over the past year.
The commanders will also assess ongoing projects related to capability development, infrastructure expansion and indigenisation under the government's ‘Make in India’ initiative and the broader vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
