India, Czech Republic agree to expand defence industrial cooperation

New Delhi, Oct 13 (UNI) India and the Czech Republic have agreed to expand defence industrial cooperation, including through joint ventures and collaborative manufacturing, with a focus on promoting 'Make in India' and strengthening 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat', as the two countries seek to deepen their longstanding industrial partnership.
The understanding was reached during a bilateral meeting between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Karel Havlíček, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic, in the national capital today.
The two leaders reviewed the entire spectrum of defence industrial cooperation and welcomed the ongoing engagements between the two countries, including the successful establishment of various joint ventures. They agreed to further expand collaboration, including under the India-Czech Joint Defence Committee, to promote indigenous defence manufacturing and strengthen bilateral industrial ties.
The discussions assume significance as India continues to prioritise domestic defence production, technology development and partnerships with foreign manufacturers to build indigenous capabilities and reduce dependence on imports. Collaboration with technologically advanced European partners offers opportunities for Indian companies to expand manufacturing capabilities, explore joint production and strengthen defence supply chains.
The Czech Republic has an established industrial and engineering base, providing scope for cooperation in specialised manufacturing and defence-related technologies. For India, such partnerships align with the broader objective of leveraging international expertise while expanding domestic production under the Make in India initiative.
The India-Czech Joint Defence Committee provides an institutional framework for reviewing bilateral defence cooperation and identifying areas for further engagement. The latest discussions are expected to build on existing industrial partnerships, although no new contracts, investment commitments or specific projects were announced in the statement.
The two leaders also discussed prevailing issues concerning peace and security and acknowledged the need for greater cooperation to maintain regional stability.
Reaffirming the foundations of bilateral relations, Singh and Havlíček noted that the partnership between India and the Czech Republic is rooted in historical and cultural ties, as well as shared values of mutual trust and respect.
Havlíček is on a four-day visit to India and is scheduled to interact with various ministries, trade representatives and businesses. His itinerary also includes visits to industrial establishments in Bengaluru and Mumbai, providing opportunities to strengthen commercial and industrial engagement between the two countries.
The visit comes amid India's efforts to expand its international defence-industrial partnerships, promote indigenous manufacturing and develop a stronger domestic defence ecosystem through collaboration, joint ventures and technology-oriented engagement with foreign partners.
