Pakistan ‘kuch khas nahi kar paya’ despite China fighter cooperation: IAF chief

Parwinder Sandhu
New Delhi, Oct 3 (UNI) The reported deepening of Pakistan-China cooperation in advanced fighter aircraft, including fifth-generation technology, is a “cause for worry”, but Pakistan has so far not been able to derive the full operational advantage from such capabilities because of a lack of integration, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh said on Saturday.
Addressing his annual press conference ahead of the 94th Air Force Day, Singh said the effectiveness of an advanced fighter aircraft would depend not merely on the platform itself but on its integration with the wider military network.
“It is a cause for worry, no doubt. But it is not just one platform that matters so much. It is integration of that platform in your own system,” he said.
Asked about Pakistan’s reported cooperation with China on fifth-generation fighter aircraft, Singh said Pakistan had so far “kuch khas kar nahi paya hai” due to the lack of integration.
The Air Chief’s remarks come against the backdrop of the longstanding and expanding defence partnership between Pakistan and China, which covers fighter aircraft, joint production, military training, exercises and defence technology.
Pakistan operates the China-origin J-10C and has jointly produced the JF-17 Thunder with China. Pakistan and China have also repeatedly described their military relationship as an “all-weather” strategic partnership. Their official statements in recent years have committed the two sides to expanding cooperation in military technology, joint exercises and defence production.
The partnership has also extended into advanced aerospace technologies. During Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari’s visit to China in September 2025, he visited the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), where he was briefed on the J-10C, the jointly produced JF-17 and progress on China’s J-20 fifth-generation fighter, as well as unmanned systems and integrated command-and-control capabilities.
In May this year, Pakistan and China again pledged to deepen defence and security cooperation, with both sides agreeing to further strengthen military-to-military cooperation and the broader China-Pakistan security partnership.UNI PWS AAB
