Rajnath Singh releases Land Warfare Doctrine, calls for 20-30-year strategic vision for Army

New Delhi, Oct 23 (UNI) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday released the Indian Army’s Land Warfare Doctrine, outlining a framework for future operational preparedness, and called upon senior military commanders to develop a long-term strategic vision for the next 20-30 years while remaining equipped to tackle immediate and emerging security challenges.
Addressing the Army Commanders’ Conference in New Delhi, Singh emphasised that military strategies must be dynamic and flexible to respond to the rapidly changing geopolitical landscape and the evolving nature of warfare.
“Op Sindoor demonstrated innovative thinking, enhanced synergy and superior coordination complemented by advanced weaponry,” the Defence Minister said, commending the armed forces for adapting to evolving operational requirements.
He said the operation conveyed a clear message that India would not hesitate to take necessary measures to safeguard its national interests.
Underscoring the importance of anticipating future threats, Singh urged Army Commanders to closely monitor geopolitical and regional developments and ensure that the force remained prepared for both long-term strategic contingencies and immediate operational challenges.
He called for sustained capability development, regular performance assessments, and timely course corrections to ensure that the Army remained responsive to changing circumstances.
Highlighting the growing role of technology in modern warfare, the Defence Minister stressed the need to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, data analytics, cybersecurity, and secure communication networks. He also appreciated the Army’s ongoing restructuring initiatives, particularly those focused on drones and emerging technologies.
Emphasising the changing character of warfare, Singh said an integrated approach was essential for addressing challenges across multiple operational domains.
“Integrated approach must for modern warfare, success depends on multi-domain capabilities and seamless coordination in joint ops,” he said.
While acknowledging the increasing significance of air, maritime, space and cyber capabilities, the Defence Minister stressed that land warfare and ground forces would continue to remain indispensable to national security.
The newly released Land Warfare Doctrine provides an overarching framework to prepare the Indian Army for the challenges arising from the changing character of warfare and future conflicts. Its release comes amid the growing emphasis on technological integration, jointness and the development of capabilities suited to emerging operational environments.
Singh also called for continued progress towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing, describing it as a key priority of the Narendra Modi-led government amid shifting global security dynamics.
“Amidst the changing global landscape, Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Government is prioritising Aatmanirbharta in defence. In the financial year 2025-26, defence production surged to a record Rs 1.78 lakh crore, with defence exports reaching an all-time high of approx. Rs 38,000 crore,” he said.
Referring to the ‘Year of Reforms - 2025’, Singh said reform was a continuous process whose success depended on effective implementation. He urged commanders to take forward the reform agenda at their respective commands and operational levels, ensuring that the initiatives translated into measurable improvements in military preparedness and operational effectiveness.
He also called for better manpower management, greater participation of women in the armed forces and sustained efforts to strengthen an integrated approach to national security.
Crediting the armed forces’ valour, discipline, preparedness and restraint, along with Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and diplomatic efforts, Singh said these factors had contributed to strengthening India’s standing internationally.
During the conference, the Defence Minister also unveiled the annual United Nations Journal and felicitated Army personnel who had made notable contributions while serving as UN peacekeepers. Their professionalism and service in support of international peace and security were recognised on the occasion.
