Delhi: Rs 622 cr approved for flood-proofing; 4.7 km wall along Yamuna, biomining to address silt

New Delhi, Oct 23 (UNI) Delhi Minister for Irrigation and Flood Control, Parvesh Verma on Friday chaired the 40th meeting of the Flood Control Board of the I&FC department and reviewed key priorities, and also cleared projects worth Rs 622 crore to strengthen the city's drainage and flood management systems.
The Board focused on long-term solutions to flooding and waterlogging, scientific disposal of desilted earth, stronger drainage infrastructure, and better preparedness for the monsoon.
To strengthen protection for areas along the river bank, the Board approved a 4.7 km reinforced cement concrete (RCC) wall along the vulnerable stretch of the Yamuna from the Magazine Road drain to the Old Railway Bridge, at a cost of Rs 99 crore.
The wall is going to protect low-lying areas during high water levels in the river during rains.
On the other hand, every year, large quantities of silt is removed from Delhi's drains during de-silting.
However, proper disposal of this silt has long been a challenge, and without a scientific system in place, desilted material often is dumped on drain banks or roadsides and gets washed back into the drains with the next rain, undoing all the work.
Now, to end this cycle, the Board has given in-principle approval to three biomining projects at a cost of Rs 260 crore for the scientific processing and disposal of silt.
The projects will especially benefit the Najafgarh drain and other major drains, which carry the heaviest silt load in the city.
The Board also discussed beautifying stretches along drains across Delhi on the lines of the Barapullah drain, with development of walkways, green belts, plantation, proper lighting and protective fencing.
Speaking after the meeting, the minister said, "Desilting means nothing if the silt finds its way back into our drains. For years, this is exactly what happened. With biomining, we will dispose of silt scientifically and break that cycle once and for all."
"Our drains should not be eyesores. Just as we have done at Barapullah, we will make drain banks across Delhi green, clean and safe,” he added.
Verma directed officials to complete all works within set timelines and ensure regular monitoring, to ensure that high standards are ensured.
