CPI(M) seeks Gyanesh Kumar’s removal, demands halt to SIR amid reported ECI rift

New Delhi, Sep 23 (UNI) The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Wednesday demanded the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and an immediate halt to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, citing a report by The Indian Express that two Election Commissioners had repeatedly raised objections to decisions concerning voter registration, deletion and restoration of names and the management of electoral-roll databases.
In a statement issued by its Polit Bureau, the CPI(M) said the Indian Express investigation had raised “serious questions not just about the process, but more importantly about the integrity of the Election Commission of India (ECI) itself”. It said the reported objections by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi reinforced concerns that the party, other Opposition parties and civil society organisations had raised since the SIR exercise began.
The Indian Express reported on Wednesday that Sandhu and Joshi had formally objected on record at least 14 times over the past 10 months to decisions and orders issued by the poll panel. Their objections reportedly covered the addition of new voters, deletion and restoration of names, changes to Form 6 used for voter registration, and the control and security of electoral-roll databases. The objections were addressed or copied to CEC Gyanesh Kumar and, in some cases, to officials working under the commissioners.
