India rolls out digital tools to track climate action

New Delhi, Sep 16 (UNI) India on Wednesday launched a digital portal for voluntary Net Zero commitments by entities and a dashboard to track implementation of the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), pitching the platforms as tools to improve transparency and monitoring of climate action.
Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Kirti Vardhan Singh unveiled the two digital tools in Mumbai on World Ozone Day 2026.
Officials said the Net Zero Portal will serve as a central platform for entities across sectors to register and disclose their Net Zero commitments voluntarily. Entities can provide details of their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, set Net Zero targets, and submit annual progress updates.
In a statement, the ministry said that the portal encourages reporting of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, while disclosure of Scope 3 emissions remains voluntary. Entities can also outline their planned pathways to Net Zero, including measures involving clean energy, energy efficiency, technology and carbon removals, where applicable.
According to the Environment Ministry, entities declaring their Net Zero targets will receive an acknowledgement from the ministry. Public disclosure of such declarations is also intended to create a consolidated repository of voluntary climate commitments by organisations and industries.
The NAPCC Dashboard, meanwhile, brings information and identified indicators related to the National Missions on climate change onto a common digital platform. It is designed to allow ministries and departments to monitor implementation and assess progress more systematically.
The ministry said the dashboard would support inter-ministerial coordination, help identify implementation gaps and facilitate evidence-based assessment of climate action. It is also intended to provide a link between domestic climate measures and India's international climate commitments.
