CPI(M) blames Bengal govt for Kolkata puja stampede, demands accountability

New Delhi, Oct 18 (UNI) The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has accused the West Bengal government of serious lapses in public safety, crowd management and medical arrangements following the stampede at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata that claimed lives on Friday night, demanding strict accountability for the tragedy.
In a statement issued on Saturday, October 18, the CPI(M) Polit Bureau expressed profound sorrow over the deaths and conveyed its condolences to the bereaved families. “We share the grief of those families who have lost their loved ones,” the party said, describing the incident during the Durga Puja festivities as deeply distressing.
The CPI(M) questioned the government's arrangements for treating those injured in the stampede, alleging that they could have received the best available medical care at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital but that the authorities had instead favoured a privately run hospital. Accusing the government of functioning as a “PR agency” for the private hospital, the party said that “no amount of sympathy and compensation will be enough for the affected people”.
