Opposition steps up attack on CEC Gyanesh Kumar after ECs flag Electoral-Roll decisions

New Delhi, Sep 23 (UNI) Opposition parties on Wednesday stepped up their attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI) and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, demanding his immediate removal and greater scrutiny of the functioning of the poll panel after a report that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had formally raised objections on several occasions to decisions concerning voter registration, deletion and restoration of names, changes to Form 6 and the management of electoral-roll data.
The political confrontation followed an investigation by The Indian Express, which reported that Sandhu and Joshi had recorded objections at least 14 times over a 10-month period to decisions and orders which they said had been taken without their knowledge or approval. The objections, according to the report, covered key aspects of the electoral process, including the addition and deletion of voters, restoration of names, the modification of Form 6 for new voters, the centralisation of electoral-roll databases and aspects of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
The report said the two Election Commissioners had also raised concerns over access to electoral-roll systems by statutory authorities at the state level and questioned changes in work allocation relating to the technology infrastructure handling voter data. In one instance, the report said, Sandhu and Joshi separately approached the Cabinet Secretary over concerns relating to the electoral-roll IT system.
