Jairam Ramesh puts Modi-Trump call under scrutiny, questions silence on Russia Oil, Visas & Pakistan

New Delhi, Sep 30 (UNI) Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s account of his telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump, saying it was conspicuously silent on several issues that, according to him, were of concern to people in India.
Ramesh said three key questions remained unanswered after Modi described his conversation with Trump as “productive” and said the two leaders had reviewed bilateral cooperation in trade, defence, energy and critical technologies, besides exchanging views on regional and international developments and efforts to advance global peace and security.
“The PM’s account of his conversation earlier this evening with his good friend Donaldbhai is eloquent by its silence on key issues agitating the people of India on India-US relations,” Ramesh said in a post on social media platform X.
The Congress leader first questioned whether Modi had raised India’s concerns over US pressure on New Delhi over its purchase of Russian oil and its economic engagement with Iran.
“Did the PM convey the nation’s concerns at the way the US has unfairly targeted India for buying oil from Russia and for its economic relationship with Iran?” he asked.
Ramesh also sought to know whether Modi had taken up concerns over US visa policies affecting Indian professionals and students.
“Did the PM convey the nation’s concerns on the way the US has targeted Indian professionals and students on visa issues?” he asked.
The third issue raised by Ramesh related to Pakistan and the US administration’s engagement with Islamabad.
He questioned whether Modi had conveyed India’s concerns over what he described as the US President and others having “embraced Pakistan”, despite India’s position on the April 22, 2025 terror attack in Pahalgam.
“Did the PM express the nation’s concerns on the way the US President himself and others have embraced Pakistan even though it had orchestrated the April 22, 2025 terror attacks in Pahalgam?” Ramesh asked.
The Prime Minister’s Office, in its account of the conversation, said Modi and Trump reviewed cooperation in trade, defence, energy, critical technologies and other areas and agreed to maintain close engagement to advance the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and international issues, including ongoing efforts to promote peace and security.
Ramesh, however, questioned Modi’s description of the conversation as “productive”, alleging that the Prime Minister was more concerned with maintaining his equation with Trump than with raising issues of concern to India.
“The PM keeps appeasing his good friend, UPI being a recent example. That is perhaps what is meant by his saying that he had a ‘productive’ conversation,” he said.
The Congress leader’s remarks came against the backdrop of continuing differences between India and the United States over trade and energy, including New Delhi’s purchases of Russian crude. At the same time, the two countries have continued to pursue cooperation in defence, technology and other strategic sectors and have been engaged in negotiations on an interim trade agreement.
The Modi-Trump conversation thus comes amid an effort by both sides to keep the broader strategic partnership on track while addressing differences over trade, energy and other issues. Ramesh’s intervention focused on whether those contentious matters were directly raised during the Prime Minister’s conversation with the US President.
