CWC demands Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, SIR halt and restoration of 13.3 cr voter names

New Delhi, Sep 29 (UNI) The Congress Working Committee on Tuesday demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, an immediate suspension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and restoration of what the party claims are 13 crore 30 lakh names removed from electoral rolls, accusing the Narendra Modi government and the Election Commission of India (ECI) of undermining electoral democracy.
The resolution adopted by the CWC, chaired by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, described the alleged manipulation of electoral rolls as a grave threat to universal adult franchise and declared that the Congress would take the battle “in Parliament, in the courts and on the streets” until the ECI was restored, in the party’s view, as an independent constitutional authority.
The CWC alleged that the RSS-BJP had sought to capture the electoral process with the assistance of the ECI under Kumar and said recent reports of differences within the poll panel had vindicated Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s warnings about what he has termed “Vote Chori”.
