Left Parties demand CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s ouster, halt to SIR; protesters detained outside EC headquarters

New Delhi, Sep 29 (UNI) Left parties on Tuesday demanded the immediate removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, a halt to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the restoration of all eligible voters whose names have been deleted, as dozens of protesters were detained during a demonstration outside the Election Commission of India headquarters in the national capital.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) alleged that Delhi Police used force against peaceful protesters, dragged them away and manhandled women demonstrators while detaining them near Nirvachan Sadan, the Election Commission's headquarters. The party condemned the police action and vowed to continue its agitation until its demands were met.
The demonstration was part of a week-long nationwide protest programme called by Left parties against the conduct of the SIR exercise and the appointment process for election commissioners. The protesters sought the ouster of Kumar, an immediate suspension of the electoral roll revision exercise and the reinclusion of all genuine voters allegedly removed during the process.
