Ram Temple donation theft: Jairam demands SC-monitored probe, accuses BJP of shielding powerful

New Delhi, Oct 19 (UNI) Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh has demanded an independent, impartial and transparent investigation under the supervision of the Supreme Court into the alleged theft of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya, accusing the BJP-led government of protecting influential individuals while criminal action has been concentrated on junior employees. He alleged that more than four months after the scandal came to light, the authorities had neither publicly disclosed the amount allegedly stolen nor adequately established accountability among senior functionaries of the temple trust.
In a sharp attack on the BJP on the social media platform X, Ramesh invoked the slogans “Chanda Chori, Aastha Dhokha” (Donation Theft, Betrayal of Faith) and “Ram naam se satta paayi, chanda chori par chuppi chhaayi” (They came to power invoking Lord Ram but have maintained silence over donation theft). He accused the BJP of using Lord Ram's name to secure political power while failing to ensure accountability in a controversy involving offerings made by devotees at one of Hinduism's most revered religious sites.
Ramesh raised a series of questions about the investigation, alleging that the circumstances surrounding the constitution of the special investigation team (SIT) by the Uttar Pradesh government had raised doubts about its independence. According to his account, the alleged theft became public on June 4, 2026, but the SIT was constituted only on June 13, nine days later, following a request from the temple trust. He further claimed that on August 17, the state Home Department submitted its final report to the trust, with Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra trust secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra reportedly receiving a clean chit.
