Delhi set for AI-driven traffic overhaul as cabinet clears Rs 1,789-crore ITMS

New Delhi, Sep 30 (UNI) The union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a Rs 1,789.52-crore Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) for Delhi, setting the stage for a city-wide technology-driven traffic network that will deploy artificial intelligence, adaptive traffic signals, automated enforcement and real-time information to make road travel safer, smoother and more predictable.
Announcing the decision, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters after the Cabinet meeting that the project would be implemented by the Delhi Police and cover 42 identified traffic corridors in three phases over 24 months, followed by five years of operation and maintenance.
The ambitious initiative seeks to transform traffic management in the national capital by moving beyond largely fixed signal timings and manual intervention to a system capable of responding dynamically to changing traffic conditions. It will bring traffic regulation, enforcement, incident management and dissemination of commuter information onto a common technology platform.
