BJP targets Congress over democratic credentials ahead of Shimla march

Shimla, Oct 27 (UNI) BJP state general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Sikander Kumar on Tuesday accused the Congress of adopting double standards on democratic values and asked the party to explain its political conduct and record before claiming to be a defender of democracy.
Addressing a meeting in Shimla here to discuss preparations for the November 1, ‘Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy’ march in Shimla, Kumar said the Congress should introspect on its own political history and commitment to democratic traditions.
He said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi frequently raised questions about democracy and constitutional institutions, but the party also needed to explain its own record.
Referring to the Emergency imposed during Congress rule, Kumar said it was ironic that the same party now projected itself as the foremost protector of democracy.
The BJP leader alleged that the Congress repeatedly questioned the credibility of constitutional institutions to divert public attention from its political failures. He claimed that the party described electoral outcomes as a victory for democracy when the results favoured it, but questioned institutions when the verdict went against it.
Kumar said the country had witnessed several initiatives in development, good governance and public welfare under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He maintained that the BJP's politics was centred on national interest, development and public service, while the Congress remained preoccupied with allegations and negative politics.
Targeting the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh, Kumar said it should be held accountable for the promises made to the people. He cited unemployment, inflation, the state's financial position and public amenities as issues requiring answers from the government.
He alleged that the state government was giving priority to political controversies to divert attention from its shortcomings.
Kumar said the November 1 march in Shimla would reiterate the BJP's commitment to democratic values and bring the Congress's policies and alleged failures before the public.
He added that the BJP would continue to raise issues concerning public welfare through democratic means and demand accountability from the Congress government.
