Jhajjar orders pollution crackdown, warns of FIRs and heavy fines for GRAP violations

Jhajjar, Oct 26 (UNI)) The Jhajjar administration on Monday ordered a district-wide crackdown on air pollution, warning of heavy penalties and criminal cases against those violating restrictions on stubble burning, open waste fires and construction dust as authorities moved to enforce the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
Deputy Commissioner Varsha Khangwal directed government departments and enforcement agencies to intensify surveillance, identify pollution hotspots and ensure strict compliance with GRAP Stage-I measures, making it clear that environmental violations would invite action under applicable laws.
The administration has instructed officials to conduct targeted inspections to detect crop-residue burning and take action against offenders. Open burning of garbage and uncontrolled dust emissions from construction activities have also been identified as priority areas for enforcement.
Khangwal directed the use of anti-smog guns and mandatory water sprinkling at government construction sites to contain dust pollution. She also ordered the removal of encroachments from urban roads to ease traffic congestion and reduce vehicular emissions.
The Deputy Commissioner asked residents to report violations through the Sameer mobile application, which allows complaints about garbage burning, construction dust, and other activities that contribute to air pollution.
The administration has also sought stricter compliance with vehicle pollution norms, urging motorists to maintain valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates, ensure proper vehicle maintenance and switch off engines at traffic signals.
Khangwal called for greater use of electric and hybrid vehicles and urged residents to avoid firecrackers during festivals.
The directions place responsibility on municipal authorities, construction agencies and other departments to prevent violations rather than merely respond to complaints after pollution levels rise.
The administration warned that offenders could face challans, substantial fines and FIRs wherever warranted under the law.
The enforcement drive comes amid concerns over deteriorating air quality in the National Capital Region, where emissions from vehicles, construction activities, waste burning and crop residue contribute to seasonal pollution.
Officials have been directed to maintain close surveillance and ensure that pollution-control measures are implemented across the district.
