MSP system being weakened: Surjewala targets Haryana govt

Panchkula, Sep 26 (UNI) Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala on Saturday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Haryana of seeking to weaken the MSP-based procurement system by imposing restrictions on paddy purchases, alleging that farmers are being penalised for producing higher yields.
Surjewala purported that the state government had fixed a per-acre limit for paddy procurement and introduced verification for produce brought to mandis beyond the prescribed quantity.
He also alleged that district-wise procurement limits has been fixed for the first time.
“Instead of putting limits on our farming and the produce of our hard work, the BJP government should ensure immediate government procurement and hassle-free MSP,” Surjewala said.
The Congress leader claimed that restricting government purchases could force farmers with produce beyond the prescribed limits to turn to private buyers, potentially leaving them vulnerable to lower prices.
He also questioned the state's 58 lakh metric tonne paddy procurement target for the current season, pointing out that official Haryana data showed procurement of 62.13 lakh metric tonnes in 2025-26.
Surjewala said governments across the world were encouraging farmers to adopt modern technology and increase productivity, while, according to him, Haryana's farmers were being subjected to scrutiny if their yields exceeded prescribed limits.
He also linked the procurement issue with action over stubble burning and harvesting restrictions, alleging that farmers were facing a series of controls from the field to the mandi.
The Haryana government, however, has said that the 58 lakh metric tonne figure is a procurement target, not a ceiling on purchases.
Agriculture Minister Shyam Singh Rana has said the government would procure the entire eligible crop arriving in mandis even if arrivals exceeded the target.
Therefore, Surjewala demanded that the government should focus on ensuring timely procurement and payment of MSP rather than imposing what he described as restrictions on farmers' produce.
