Nihang beaten, woman SHO manhandled in Amritsar clash

Chandigarh, Sep 19 (UNI) A woman police station house officer was allegedly manhandled while trying to rescue a Nihang Sikh who was being assaulted during a confrontation between rival groups in Amritsar, with a video of the incident showing police struggling to pull the injured man away from the crowd.
The incident occurred during a protest on Jhabal Road on Friday night, where a group of Nihangs had gathered accusing police of failing to act over an alleged earlier confrontation with supporters of Nihang Major Singh Petewad.
Police said they were investigating the competing allegations.
A video of the confrontation shows a Nihang arriving at the protest site on a motorcycle before being surrounded by several men. He is seen being questioned and slapped before the confrontation escalates, with several people apparently striking and kicking him and hitting him with sticks.
His turban also comes off during the scuffle.
Gate Hakima police station SHO Manjit Kaur reached the spot with a police team after being informed about the violence.
As Kaur and other officers attempted to take the injured man away, protesters are seen confronting the police and pulling at the man. The video also shows pushing and jostling involving the SHO.
Police eventually managed to place the injured Nihang in a vehicle and remove him from the scene.
The protesters alleged that the man had been sent by the rival group to conduct surveillance on them.
Baba Darshan Singh, who was associated with the protesting group, alleged that vehicles belonging to Major Singh's supporters had passed his residence a day earlier and that people travelling in them had fired shots.
“They came in vehicles and fired shots. We believe the police are siding with them,” Darshan Singh alleged.
He also accused Major Singh of using photographs of his ancestors to collect money from people, a claim that could not be independently verified.
The protesters said they had staged the demonstration after police failed to act on their complaint about the alleged firing. They also sought protection for themselves and their families.
SHO Kaur gave a different account of events preceding the protest.
“The dispute began over claims that some vehicles had passed through the area,” Kaur said. “The protesters said the vehicles belonged to Major Singh's group, but according to police personnel deployed there, no such vehicles passed during the night.”
She said police were examining the allegations and would take action against anyone found responsible.
“The entire matter is under investigation. Strict action will be taken against those found guilty,” Kaur said.
