Actor-filmmaker Yashpal Sharma calls for uniform rules on gun culture, says targeting one artist is wrong

Chandigarh, Sep 19 (UNI) Bollywood actor and filmmaker Yashpal Sharma on Saturday called for uniform rules to address the portrayal of gun culture in music and cinema, saying it was wrong to single out an individual artist while similar content was being produced by others.
Speaking on the sidelines of a two-day international film festival at the State University of Performing and Visual Arts (SUPVA) in Rohtak, Sharma said restrictions, if considered necessary, should apply equally.
“Targeting one person is wrong,” Sharma said. “If six or seven songs of the same artist are banned, it clearly looks like that person is being singled out. If the government wants to act, the rules should be the same for everyone.”
He did not name the artist while making the remarks.
Sharma said he personally preferred cinema that communicated through “the language of love” rather than violence.
“I understand the language of love, and that is the kind of cinema I want to show,” he said.
His remarks came at the International Film Festival organised by the Haryani Innovative Film Association (HIFA), where regional, Punjabi and foreign films as well as short films, documentaries and music videos are being screened.
The festival opened with a screening of 'Muawza' and also features interactions between filmmakers, actors and students.
Sharma, who has worked extensively to promote cinema in the Haryanvi language, said the industry had begun producing more films but needed to develop a larger audience.
“Haryanvi cinema is being made, but what it needs now is an audience,” he said. “A film festival is also a form of training for young people because they get an opportunity to watch and understand different kinds of cinema.”
Sharma said work on his film 'Dada Lakhmi', based on the life of Haryanvi folk artist Pandit Lakhmi Chand, began in 2016. He claimed the film had since received 108 awards in India and abroad.
He said films such as Azad Singh, Angad Singh, Sangi and Dhani reflected growing activity in Haryanvi cinema.
Punjabi singer Kaka, actor Prince Kanwaljit Singh and several filmmakers and artists also attended the festival and interacted with SUPVA students during different sessions.
The festival is scheduled to conclude on Sunday, with Haryana Information, Public Relations, Languages and Culture Department Commissioner and Secretary K.M. Pandurang expected to attend the closing ceremony as chief guest.
