Punjab Police raid 593 locations, arrest 269 in statewide anti-gangster operation

Chandigarh, Sep 19 (UNI) Punjab Police arrested 269 people and raided 593 locations linked to suspected gangster associates across the state on Saturday, as part of an intensified campaign against organised crime, police said.
Three weapons were recovered during the raids, while six proclaimed offenders were among those arrested, according to a police statement.
Police also initiated preventive action against 233 people.
The operation was conducted on the 242nd day of “Gangstran Te Vaar”, a statewide campaign launched on January 20 and coordinated by the Anti-Gangster Task Force with police units in all districts.
“Police teams from all districts, in coordination with the Anti-Gangster Task Force, are conducting special operations across the state,” police said.
Punjab Police said the cumulative number of arrests recorded under the campaign had reached 72,049.
Police did not provide a breakdown of how many of Saturday's 269 arrests related to newly registered criminal cases, outstanding cases or other proceedings. The cumulative figures were released by police and could not be independently verified.
Authorities urged people to anonymously report information about wanted criminals, gangsters and other criminal activity through the state's anti-gangster helpline, 93946-93946.
In a parallel crackdown on narcotics, police said they arrested 73 suspected drug traffickers on Saturday, the 567th day of the state's “Yudh Nashian Virudh” campaign.
Police reported recovering 17.1 kg of heroin, 780 grams of opium, 1,085 intoxicant tablets and Rs 1,650 in alleged drug proceeds.
The latest arrests took the number of suspected drug traffickers detained during the campaign to 78,233, according to police data.
As part of the government's de-addiction initiative, police said nine people were persuaded on Saturday to undergo treatment and rehabilitation.
