Woman held for allegedly demanding Rs 70 lakh to withdraw rape case in Haryana's Hisar

Panchkula, Sep 27 (UNI) Haryana Police have arrested a woman for allegedly demanding Rs 70 lakh from a man to get a rape case registered against him cancelled, a police spokesman said on Sunday.
The accused, identified as Suman, a resident of Rampura Mohalla in Hisar, was produced before a court, which remanded her to 14 days' judicial custody at the Hisar district jail, police said.
According to police, the woman had earlier lodged a rape case against the complainant at Civil Lines police station in Hisar.
The complainant subsequently approached police alleging that the woman was demanding Rs 70 lakh from him in return for getting the rape case cancelled and was threatening to pursue action against him if he failed to pay.
Acting on the complaint, Civil Lines police registered a separate case of alleged extortion and blackmail and arrested the woman during the investigation.
Police said the rape allegations and the subsequent extortion complaint are separate matters, and the woman's arrest relates to the alleged demand for money. The allegations against her remain subject to investigation and adjudication by the court.
After questioning the accused and examining evidence collected in the case, police produced her before the court, which sent her to judicial custody for 14 days.
Hisar Police said complaints involving demands for money through threats, blackmail or promises to influence the outcome of a criminal case would be investigated and action taken in accordance with law.
Police also appealed to people facing demands for money through threats involving criminal cases, photographs, videos or private information to approach the authorities rather than give in to such pressure.
