Road rage turns fatal in Panchkula: Youth stabbed to death over motorcycle dispute, two held

Panchkula, Oct 24 (UNI) A minor road dispute over a motorcycle allegedly escalated into a fatal stabbing in Panchkula, where a youth visiting the Ghaggar river for Durga idol immersion was murdered following an earlier altercation, police said on Saturday, announcing the arrest of a 19-year-old suspect and the apprehension of his 16-year-old accomplice.
The victim, Chandan, a resident of Dhanas in Chandigarh, was stabbed multiple times near Chowki Cut on October 22, allegedly by two youths who held a grudge against him over an argument earlier that evening.
Police said the main accused, Suraj, 19, was arrested on October 23, within 24 hours of the murder, while his 16-year-old accomplice was apprehended on Saturday.
The knife allegedly used in the killing has also been recovered.
According to Panchkula Deputy Commissioner of Police Aditi Singh, Chandan was travelling with family members and friends to the Ghaggar river to immerse an idol of Goddess Durga when a dispute erupted after a motorcycle allegedly cut across their path near the Sector-26 traffic lights in Chandigarh.
The confrontation was initially defused by their companions, and both groups continued their journey.
However, around 9 pm, Chandan again encountered the accused near Chowki Cut.
Police alleged that the two attacked him with a knife, inflicting multiple stab wounds.
His friends rushed him to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh, where doctors declared him dead.
Following a complaint, a murder case was registered at Chandimandir police station on October 23 under Sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
A police team led by Chandimandir Station House Officer Rampal launched an investigation and arrested Suraj the same day. The minor was apprehended on October 24.
Police said Suraj was produced before a court on Saturday and remanded to judicial custody, while the minor was sent to a juvenile observation home in accordance with the law.
Panchkula Commissioner of Police Pankaj Nain expressed concern over minor disagreements escalating into deadly violence and urged young people to exercise restraint.
He said disputes should be resolved through dialogue and lawful means rather than violence, warning that a moment of anger could cost someone their life and destroy the future of those involved.
Police said further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing was underway.
