Punjab police officer shot dead in Amritsar, DGP says assailants will face 'exemplary action'

Chandigarh, Sep 18 (UNI) An assistant sub-inspector of Punjab Police was shot dead at close range by unidentified assailants in Amritsar, state police chief Gaurav Yadav said, as investigators examined CCTV footage and forensic evidence to track down the attackers.
ASI Harjit Singh, posted at Gate Hakiman police station, had left the station at around 9:30 p.m. for duty at Dana Mandi.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the attack took place at around 12:30 a.m., police said.
The assailants are suspected to have followed the officer on a two-wheeler before firing at him from point-blank range with a .30-bore pistol.
The bullet struck the back of his head or neck, according to the initial investigation.
Police recovered an empty .30-bore cartridge case and bloodstains from the crime scene.
Forensic teams were examining the evidence and the exact cause of death would be established through the post-mortem examination, police said.
Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav visited the crime scene and reviewed the investigation after meeting the slain officer's family.
“We have constituted multiple teams and are examining CCTV footage and the entire movement trail,” Yadav said.
“We are hopeful of achieving a breakthrough very soon.”
Police were using technical and forensic analysis to reconstruct the sequence of events and identify the assailants, he said.
Yadav said the killing would be investigated thoroughly and warned that everyone involved would be brought to justice.
“Whoever is involved in this heinous crime will face the strictest action. We will take exemplary action against the accused so that nobody dares to take the law into their own hands,” Yadav said.
Police have not yet announced any arrests or disclosed a possible motive for the killing.
