Dera Beas volunteer shot dead, another critically injured; police have launched an investigation

Chandigarh, Oct 31 (UNI) - A volunteer of the Radha Soami Satsang Beas was shot dead and another critically injured on Saturday afternoon following a confrontation over disputed agricultural land in Ghaziwal village near Beas in Amritsar district, Punjab, according to preliminary reports.
The deceased was identified as Manjit Singh, while the injured volunteer, Davinder Singh, was admitted to the Civil Hospital at Baba Bakala Sahib for treatment.
The shooting took place around 3 p.m. when the two volunteers reportedly visited the village to undertake agricultural activities on a parcel of land associated with Dera Beas.
Initial reports suggested that the incident followed a disagreement over approximately six kanals of land involving the family of Jodhbir Singh, also known as Jodha.
According to a report published on Saturday, Jodhbir Singh allegedly arrived at the disputed site accompanied by three to four associates, leading to a confrontation with the volunteers over cultivation of the land.
The confrontation escalated into an argument before shots were fired, leaving Manjit Singh dead at the scene and Davinder Singh seriously wounded.
Those allegedly involved in the shooting fled following the incident, the report said.
Police teams reached the village and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the killing, including the competing claims over the land and the involvement of individuals present during the confrontation.
Investigators are seeking to establish the sequence of events that led to the shooting and determine who fired the fatal shots.
The reported involvement of Jodhbir Singh and his associates has not been independently confirmed through an official police statement, and there was no immediate confirmation that any individual had been formally named as an accused.
The incident has brought renewed attention to the dispute over the agricultural property, although the precise nature of the competing ownership or cultivation claims remains unclear.
The land was described in the initial report as belonging to Dera Beas, but no official revenue records or court documents were immediately available to independently establish its ownership.
Police have yet to disclose whether the dispute had previously resulted in complaints, litigation or requests for intervention by local authorities.
Authorities also have not confirmed the number of weapons used, the number of rounds fired, or whether any arrests have been made.
The injured volunteer's condition and any statement recorded from him could help investigators establish how the confrontation unfolded.
There was no immediate official statement from the Dera Beas management regarding the incident.
Further details, including the registration of a criminal case and the identities of those responsible, were awaited as the investigation continued.
