Haryana plans steel silo on 100 acres along Ambala-Shahbad belt; Rs 290.73 crore push to expand, upgrade grain storage

Panchkula, Sep 18 (UNI) Haryana is planning a steel silo complex on a 100-acre site along the Ambala-Shahbad belt to strengthen grain storage facilities for farmers, while another silo project is under construction in Yamunanagar, Bureau of Public Enterprises Chairman Mohan Lal Kaushik said on Friday.
Reviewing the progress of the Haryana State Warehousing Corporation, Kaushik said the Ambala-Shahbad proposal had been prepared and would be taken up for implementation shortly. Work on the Yamunanagar silo was progressing rapidly, he added.
The state is also undertaking a Rs 290.73-crore programme to construct new warehouses and renovate existing storage facilities.
Kaushik said the corporation has drawn up a plan to construct 2.30 lakh metric tonnes of new storage capacity at a cost of Rs 180.05 crore. Another 1.43 lakh MT of existing warehouse capacity will be renovated at a cost of Rs 110.68 crore.
The programme follows Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini's budget announcement for creation of storage facilities with a capacity of around three lakh metric tonnes, he said.
Kaushik said steel silos allow grain to be stored using modern technology and provide greater protection during long-term storage. The government was therefore focusing on expanding silo-based infrastructure to ensure that farmers' produce remained safe for longer periods.
He directed officials to conduct fortnightly and monthly inspections of warehouses across the state, saying storage facilities should be closely monitored to prevent damage to grain.
Giving details of the corporation's operations, Kaushik said it procured 10.32 lakh metric tonnes of paddy at Minimum Support Price (MSP) through 86 mandis last year. The corporation has also procured wheat and bajra in previous years.
At present, grain is being stored at 124 locations with an aggregate storage capacity of 28.30 lakh metric tonnes, he said. Of this, 19.15 lakh MT capacity is in corporation-owned warehouses and 5.45 lakh MT in private warehouses, according to the information released after the review.
