ED detains Punjabi film producer linked to CM Mann in alleged Rs 5-crore bribery case

Chandigarh, Oct 17 (UNI) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has detained Punjabi film producer Amardeep Singh Grewal, reported to be a relative of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, in connection with an alleged Rs 5-crore bribe demand to secure the quashing of a rape case registered in Mohali.
Grewal was taken to the ED headquarters in New Delhi for questioning following the issuance of a lookout notice against him. The agency had summoned him on October 7 and 9, but he failed to appear on both occasions. The ED has yet to officially confirm the detention or disclose details of the proceedings.
According to reports, Grewal is a relative of Mann through his wife, Dr Gurpreet Kaur. He is married to a cousin of the chief minister's wife. However, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and a Punjab government spokesperson have denied any familial relationship between Grewal and the chief minister.
Grewal, associated with East Sunshine Production Pvt Ltd, has been linked to Punjabi films including Maujaan Hi Maujaan and Snowman.
The investigation relates to allegations of a Rs 5-crore demand for getting a rape case quashed. The case was registered against Gurwinder Singh, alias Guri Chahal, at the Sohana police station in Mohali on May 1 following a complaint by a 26-year-old woman accusing him of rape, blackmail and criminal intimidation.
The alleged bribery demand surfaced during proceedings before the Punjab and Haryana High Court, where the complainant's father accused certain individuals of attempting to influence the investigation and secure the cancellation of the FIR.
A separate petition filed by Simranjit Singh Hundal, a friend of Chahal, also raised allegations concerning Grewal's alleged involvement in demanding money to get criminal cases quashed.
On July 20, the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed that the investigation be transferred from the local police to a senior officer working under the supervision of the Special Director General of Police.
The controversy subsequently assumed political significance after retired Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Justice Ranjit Singh publicly referred to the allegations. Opposition leaders, including those from the BJP, raised questions over the purported demand, with the party also citing an alleged audio recording.
