CBSE asks schools to hold 15-day programmes on tribal freedom fighters, culture from Nov 1

Panchkula, Oct 31 (UNI) The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked all its affiliated schools to organise educational and cultural activities from November 1 to 15 to commemorate Janjatiya Gaurav Divas 2026, with a special focus on educating students about tribal freedom fighters, indigenous heritage and the contribution of tribal communities to India's history and society.
In a circular, the Board outlined a series of suggested activities, including workshops, cultural performances, competitions, community outreach programmes and tributes to tribal freedom fighters, particularly Bhagwan Birsa Munda.
The 15-day observance, being organised nationwide for the sixth time since its introduction in 2021, is intended to familiarise students with tribal traditions, art, culture and the role played by tribal communities in India's freedom struggle.
CBSE has asked school heads to ensure meaningful participation by students and other stakeholders, moving beyond ceremonial observances to activities that encourage research, creativity and interaction with tribal communities.
According to the Circular, schools may organise age-appropriate workshops on tribal art, dance, music, handicrafts, cultural traditions and environmental conservation. The Board has also suggested competitions in painting, essay writing, poetry, storytelling, photography, traditional crafts, folk dance and drama to encourage students to explore the cultural and historical contributions of tribal communities.
Suggested competition themes include 'My Tribe, My Heritage', 'Stories from My Tribal Heritage', 'Voices of Tribal India' and 'Tribal Contribution to India's Freedom Struggle'.
Students may also participate in quizzes on tribal freedom fighters, indigenous languages, traditional knowledge and the role of tribal communities in India's history.
The circular places emphasis on community engagement, encouraging students to participate in cleanliness drives, plantation programmes and other outreach activities involving tribal communities.
Schools may also organise programmes recognising tribal achievers, including scholars and other distinguished personalities, to introduce students to role models from these communities.
A special tribute to Bhagwan Birsa Munda and other tribal freedom fighters has been suggested for November 15.
The Board has encouraged cultural presentations, including street plays highlighting tribal education, health, livelihoods, environmental protection and social development.
Schools have also been asked to document their activities, including photographs, videos, brief reports, participant numbers and details of events, for submission through the designated Janjatiya Gaurav Divas portal of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
The communication has also been circulated to the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, Eklavya Model Residential Schools and other educational authorities for dissemination to schools under their jurisdiction.
The circular, signed by CBSE Director (Academics) Dr Praggya M. Singh, seeks to encourage students to develop a deeper understanding of India's tribal heritage and recognise the contributions of tribal communities to the country's cultural diversity and national history.
