Karnal plans to turn garden waste into useful products, curb burning

Karnal, Oct 19 (UNI) Karnal Municipal Corporation is preparing a plan to turn discarded leaves, grass and branches into useful products, seeking to tackle open waste heaps and leaf burning while exploring revenue from processed material.
A municipal team led by Additional Municipal Commissioner Ashok Kumar inspected Chandigarh’s horticultural waste processing plant to assess practices that could be adopted in Karnal. Municipal Commissioner Saloni Sharma directed the visit.
“The aim is to ensure proper management of dry leaves, grass, branches and other horticultural waste and convert it into useful products,” Sharma said.
Sharma said organised collection and processing would help curb open dumping and the burning of dry leaves, reducing air pollution and improving the city’s sanitation.
“Processing this waste into useful products could also create opportunities for the corporation to generate revenue,” Sharma added.
The team studied the Chandigarh plant’s operations, examining how horticultural waste is collected, processed and put to use. Officials also discussed operating arrangements and waste utilisation with their Chandigarh counterparts.
Chief Sanitation Inspector Surendra Chopra, Assistant Engineer Manish Aggarwal and Junior Engineer Munish Lalar accompanied Kumar.
