No immediate threat from glacier lake in Kangra, says DC after 14-km trek

Kangra, Sep 28 (UNI) A joint team of the Kangra district administration and District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) inspected a high-altitude glacier lake at Dainsar in the remote Poling area of Multhan tehsil of Baijnath subdivision and found no immediate threat from the lake under the present conditions.
Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa and Baijnath SDM Sankalp Gautam led the 22-member team on a challenging 14-km trek through rugged terrain to assess the lake, its surroundings, drainage channels, possible outflow routes and downstream risk areas.
The team included Multhan Tehsildar Harish, DDMA representative Kuldeep Singh, officials of the Jal Shakti and Revenue departments, and a search and rescue team from the Mountaineering Institute led by its in-charge Jitendra.
After the inspection, Bairwa said no signs of immediate danger has been detected.
However, keeping in view the area's seismic sensitivity and geographical vulnerability, he directed officials to prepare a proposal for installing an Early Warning System (EWS) for real-time monitoring of water levels and timely alerts in case of any abnormal changes.
Moreover, he also directed that regular mock drills and evacuation exercises be conducted in potentially vulnerable downstream areas, including Poling, Cherna, Lohardi and Lohardi School, to strengthen community preparedness and disaster response.
