Govt medical colleges in Himachal to get specialised Centres of Excellence

Shimla, September 19 (UNI) The Himachal Pradesh government has constituted an Expert Committee to examine a proposal for setting up Centres of Excellence in specialised departments of all Government Medical Colleges in the state, including Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialty (AIMSS), Chamiana.
The committee has been constituted on the directives of Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and has been tasked with identifying two to four departments in each medical college that have the potential to be developed as Centres of Excellence.
A government spokesperson said on Saturday that the proposed centres would focus on multidisciplinary treatment of complex, rare and critical diseases requiring specialised expertise, advanced technology and facilities beyond conventional departmental services.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening tertiary and super-speciality healthcare within the state and reducing the need for patients to travel outside Himachal Pradesh for advanced treatment. The centres would also promote specialised medical training and focused research.
The committee will assess requirements for infrastructure upgradation, advanced medical technology, specialised manpower, equipment, training and other financial implications.
Its recommendations are expected to provide a roadmap for strengthening specialised healthcare facilities in government medical institutions, said the spokesperson.
Dr D.K. Verma, Vice Chancellor of Atal Medical Research University, Nerchowk, Mandi, will head the committee. Dr Gopal Beri, Director, Medical Education and Research, Shimla, Dr Milap Sharma, Principal, Dr RPGMC Tanda, Dr Brij Sharma, Principal, AIMSS Chamiana, Dr Balbir Verma, Professor of General Medicine at IGMC Shimla, and Dr Puneet Mahajan, Professor of General Surgery at IGMC Shimla, are members.
The Additional/Joint Director, SLBSGMC Nerchowk, Mandi, will function as Member Secretary.
The committee has been directed to submit its detailed report within two weeks.
The spokesperson said the proposed Centres of Excellence would facilitate collaboration among different specialties while strengthening the academic and research environment in the state's medical institutions.
