President Murmu visits Atal Tunnel, offers prayers at Hidimba Temple

Shimla, October 7 (UNI) President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday visited the 9.02-km-long Atal Tunnel, located at an altitude of over 10,000 feet, during the second day of her three-day visit to Himachal Pradesh.
Governor Kavinder Gupta and Lady Governor Bindu Gupta accompanied the President during her visit to the tunnel's North Portal, where she was accorded a traditional welcome by local residents.
Technical Education Minister and Minister-in-Waiting Rajesh Dharmani, BJP MP Kangana Ranaut, Lahaul-Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana, Deputy Commissioner Kiran Badana, senior district administration officials and Army personnel were also present to receive the President.
Dharmani presented a memento to the President on the occasion.
Describing the Atal Tunnel as an outstanding example of world-class engineering, the Governor said the project had brought Lahaul-Spiti closer to the rest of the country.
He said the tunnel was a testament to India's vision, technological capability and commitment to connecting remote and difficult-to-access areas with the rest of the country.
The Governor said the tunnel represented India's capabilities in modern infrastructure and strategic development.
Projects constructed under challenging geographical conditions not only improve connectivity but also open avenues for development and new opportunities for people living in remote areas, he added.
During the visit, the President showed keen interest in various aspects of the engineering and construction of the Atal Tunnel and was briefed about its technical features.
She also enjoyed the scenic Himalayan landscape surrounding the tunnel.
Later, President Murmu and Governor Gupta visited the historic Hidimba Temple at Dhungri in Manali and offered prayers. They prayed for peace, prosperity and well-being of the people of the country.
The Governor also visited the Forest Rest House in Manali and planted a sapling of the rare Ginkgo biloba, conveying a message of environmental conservation and protection of the Himalayan ecosystem.
Gupta said preserving Himachal Pradesh's rich natural heritage was a collective responsibility and stressed the need to promote environmental protection, safeguard natural resources and ensure sustainable development in the mountain regions.
