Himachal-Punjab governments shielding drug mafia, alleges Shrikant Sharma

Shimla, Oct 26 (UNI) BJP Himachal Pradesh in-charge and Mathura (Uttar Pradesh) MLA Shrikant Sharma on Monday accused the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh and the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab of allowing the illegal trade in chitta and other narcotic substances to flourish under alleged official protection.
He said the growing influence of the drug mafia in the two states had posed a serious threat to the future of youth and the well-being of families, alleging that both governments had failed to effectively curb drug trafficking.
“The drug mafia will not be allowed to operate in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab,” Sharma said, calling for strict action against drug traffickers and those allegedly providing them protection.
He said that despite repeated claims of a crackdown on drugs, there was little evidence of decisive action to dismantle trafficking networks at the ground level.
“If the governments are serious about tackling the menace, why has decisive action not been taken against the entire drug trafficking network and its alleged protectors?” he asked.
Describing chitta as more than a law-and-order issue, Sharma said drug abuse had emerged as a serious social challenge threatening the future of the younger generation.
He called for a coordinated campaign involving the police, administration, educational institutions and society to combat the menace.
The BJP leader demanded an impartial investigation into allegations of political patronage, the operations of major drug trafficking networks and interstate supply chains in both states. He also called for strict legal action against those found guilty.
Sharma said the BJP would continue its public awareness campaigns and democratic struggle for a drug-free Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, adding that the future of young people could not be allowed to be jeopardised.
