Surjewala targets Haryana Govt after HC ruling on reserved candidates’ Merit Rights

Panchkula, Oct 3 (UNI) Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala on Saturday stepped up his attack on the Haryana BJP government over recruitment practices, alleging that reserved-category candidates were being denied jobs despite qualifying on merit, and cited a Punjab and Haryana High Court ruling involving Indira Gandhi University (IGU), Meerpur.
Surjewala said the court, while dealing with the university’s laboratory attendant recruitment, held that a reserved-category candidate securing marks above the general-category cut-off could compete for a general-category post on merit.
“The BJP has made denying the rights of SC, BC-A, BC-B and EWS youth a permanent pattern in recruitment,” Surjewala alleged.
He said the recruitment process dated back to 2019 and accused the authorities of forcing deserving candidates into a prolonged legal battle for appointments they should have received on merit.
According to Surjewala, the court directed the university to reassess merit and take consequential steps to appoint eligible candidates.
The Congress leader said the ruling was not an isolated case and referred to another High Court decision concerning HPSC assistant professor recruitment, in which he alleged that reserved-category candidates had faced an arbitrary condition when seeking consideration for general-category posts.
Surjewala also attacked the HPSC and HSSC over the use of minimum cut-offs and the “not found suitable” criterion, alleging these had left reserved-category posts vacant.
He claimed that 31 per cent of posts in 55 Class-I and Class-II recruitment exercises conducted by the HPSC during the past 21 months remained unfilled.
“This is not about one recruitment. It is about social justice and the future of thousands of deserving young people,” Surjewala said.
He demanded that vacant reserved-category posts be filled and merit and reservation rules be applied transparently across Haryana government recruitments.
There was no immediate response from the Haryana government to the allegations. UNI KK SAS
