Congress workers protests in Srinagar, demand CEC resignation

Srinagar, Oct 8 (UNI) Congress workers Thursday staged a protest in Srinagar, demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls.
Raising slogans against the Election Commission and the BJP, the protesters described the day as a “black day” and alleged that the sanctity of the electoral process was being undermined. The demonstration was held outside the Congress headquarters, where a heavy security presence, including police and CRPF personnel, was deployed.
The protesters attempted to move towards the main M A Road and raise their demands, but security forces had erected barricades to prevent them from proceeding further. Police personnel pushed the demonstrators back towards the Congress headquarters as tensions rose during the protest, eyewitnesses said.
The District Congress Committee (DCC) Srinagar president Aadil Farooq Mir said that observed a “Black Day” in protest against the detention of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other opposition MPs during protests in New Delhi against the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
q Mir accused the government of disrespecting the Constitution, referring to the police action against Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders during their attempts to march towards Jantar Mantar.
“Yesterday, you all saw how the government once again murdered the Constitution and disrespected it,” Mir said.
He said the Congress was observing the day as a mark of protest against what he described as a “corrupt and non-democratic government”.
Mir also accused the government of being involved in “illegal activities” and said the Congress would continue to mobilise public support against what he termed the erosion of democratic institutions.
On Wednesday, local leaders of the INDIA bloc had reaffirmed their collective commitment to protecting the Constitution, democratic institutions and the integrity of the electoral process.
