Farooq Abdullah welcomes SC notice, hopes ‘mistakes’ will be addressed

Srinagar, Oct 5 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) President Farooq Abdullah on Monday welcomed the Supreme Court's decision to seek responses from the Election Commission on pleas challenging the poll panel's functioning.
“I am very happy that the Supreme Court has taken notice of this,” Abdullah told reporters in Srinagar. “We are hopeful that they (SC) will look into the mistakes done by them and they will be addressed.”
The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to the Election Commission and the Centre, seeking their responses within a week to a plea challenging decisions allegedly taken by the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar without the approval of the other two Election Commissioners.
Earlier in the day at a party function in Srinagar, Farooq Abdullah stressed the importance of organisational discipline and adherence to the party constitution, saying these were key to ensuring the success and strength of any organisation.
Addressing the Srinagar District Working Committee meeting, Abdullah said the Naya Kashmir Manifesto, the party’s agenda and its Constitution were the organisation’s greatest assets and urged every party member to follow its principles and guidelines in letter and spirit.
A party statement said Abdullah chaired a special meeting of the members of the Srinagar District Working Committee, including all the Party’s MLAs from the district, at the Party headquarters, Nawa-e-Subah Complex.
The meeting held detailed deliberations on Party activities in Srinagar district, organisational programmes, issues and difficulties confronting the people, the pace of developmental works, and measures to further strengthen and activate the Party at the grassroots level. Participants also shared their views and suggestions on various issues.
Abdullah urged party office-bearers and workers to discharge their responsibilities at every level and at all times in accordance with the party constitution.
He said that the founder of the movement, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, repeatedly emphasised the golden principle that “people are the source of power and sovereignty belongs to the people.”
He said every person associated with the Party must make these principles the foundation of their political and organisational work.
The former Chief Minister stressed the need to acquaint the younger generation with the history of Kashmir, saying that unfortunately, many young people today are not fully aware of their history or the circumstances through which the Kashmiri people have passed.
He said the younger generation needs to be made aware of the extent of oppression, repression, exploitation, poverty, deprivation, helplessness and marginalisation suffered by the people of Kashmir, and how they were deprived of their basic human and political rights during the era of autocratic rule.
He directed party workers to maintain close and continuous contact with the people and make every possible effort to address their issues and difficulties.
He said public service has always remained the core objective of the National Conference’s politics, and Party workers must stand with the people in their times of difficulty, take up their concerns at the appropriate forums and make sincere efforts towards their resolution.
He said the present National Conference Government is functioning under extremely difficult circumstances within the UT system and with severely limited powers, often having to operate “on the edge of a sword.” Despite these constraints, the Government is utilising all available resources and limited powers to provide maximum relief to the people, improve basic amenities and advance the developmental process.
