Himachal to press legal battle for BBMB power share, water dues from Haryana, Punjab

Shimla, June 28 (UNI) Accusing the Centre, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan of step-motherly treatment, Himachal Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has reiterated the state's demand for 12 per cent free power royalty from the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) and stressed that all centrally-established power projects on state land should be transferred to the Himachal government after 40 years, as per state policy.
Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister said the state is engaged in a protracted battle to secure the rights of its people. He questioned the profit-making by central agencies from hydel power generated from Himachal's rivers while denying rightful benefits to the state.
“If water from our streams is generating electricity, shouldn’t Himachalis receive their fair share?” he asked.
CM Sukhu emphasised that the state is taking the matter up persistently through legal avenues and other platforms. He pointed out that people displaced due to the BBMB project—especially from Bilaspur—are still waiting for their land allotments in Rajasthan, and the state is committed to fighting for their pending rights.
Addressing a public meeting in Dehuri village in Banjar subdivision of Kullu under the ‘Sarkar Gaon Ke Dwar’ initiative, Sukhu asserted that Himachal is ready to supply water to New Delhi and Haryana but only if they settle the BBMB arrears pending for over 14 years.
He said neighbouring states must file affidavits in the Supreme Court agreeing to pay dues before any progress on the Kishau Dam project.
Referring to the Supreme Court's earlier ruling awarding Himachal a 12 per cent share in BBMB, Sukhu declared that the state will move the apex court again to demand compliance. “If Haryana files its affidavit, it would compel Punjab to release its 6 per cent share to meet Himachal's total entitlement,” he said.
The Himachal government is also fighting legal battles over compensation for land losers in Bhakra and Pong dams and asserting control over hydropower projects like Shanan.
The CM reaffirmed that his government would not compromise on the state's interests and is determined to get rightful compensation and power shares through all available forums.
