Eggs, tomatoes hurled at BJP leader Ravneet Bittu’s convoy in Punjab; he blames AAP

Chandigarh, Sep 18 (UNI) BJP leader and former union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu said on Friday that his convoy was attacked with eggs, tomatoes and other objects near Batala while he was travelling to Pathankot to join the party’s statewide anti-drug campaign, an allegation denied by the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The incident took place at Ghasitpura village, about eight km from Batala on the Amritsar-Pathankot highway, shortly before the launch of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s “Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra”.
Bittu said vehicles in his cavalcade were damaged and window panes of two escort vehicles were broken. He also said a jammer vehicle was damaged.
Bittu alleged that people associated with AAP were behind the incident.
His office said his security personnel had caught three people following the confrontation and alleged they were linked to the ruling party.
Bittu also accused local AAP legislator Amansher Singh “Sherry” Kalsi of sending people to obstruct his journey to Pathankot. The allegations against Kalsi could not immediately be independently verified.
AAP denied involvement.
AAP leader Joban Randhawa said party workers had been holding a peaceful protest and alleged that it was Bittu’s supporters who targeted them.
Bittu said the confrontation was more serious than eggs and tomatoes being thrown at the vehicles, alleging that some people in the crowd were carrying weapons and that threats were shouted during the incident.
He demanded an investigation and said he had informed the union Home Ministry.
“If anything happens to me,” Bittu said, the Punjab chief minister and the state police chief would be responsible, while calling on the state government to ensure the safety of political leaders and workers.
Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon condemned the incident and accused AAP workers of attacking Bittu’s convoy ahead of the anti-drug march.
Dhillon alleged that AAP had become “rattled” by the BJP campaign and said throwing eggs and tomatoes and damaging vehicles would not deter his party from pursuing its campaign against drugs.
He also targeted Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, and called upon Punjab’s Director General of Police to take immediate action against those responsible.
Dhillon’s claims linking the incident to AAP and to what he described as a “drug mafia” were political allegations and were not independently established.
The incident came as the BJP began an ambitious statewide campaign focused on Punjab’s drug problem.
The party plans four yatras that will together travel nearly 4,000 km through all 117 Assembly constituencies, culminating in Jalandhar on Sept. 30.
BJP national president Nitin Nabin was scheduled to flag off the first procession from Madhopur in Pathankot district.
The campaign comes ahead of Punjab’s 2027 Assembly election and is aimed at making drug abuse a central issue in the BJP’s outreach across the state.
BJP leaders have accused successive state governments of failing to curb the drug problem, while the ruling AAP has said its government has intensified enforcement and action against drug trafficking.
