SP changes two MLC candidates in UP

Lucknow, Oct 3 (UNI) The Samajwadi Party on Saturday replaced two of its candidates for the biennial Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections, dropping the names of two recent entrants and fielding new candidates for the Agra and Gorakhpur-Faizabad constituencies.
SP president Akhilesh Yadav announced the changes at the party's state headquarters in Lucknow.
The party has fielded Dr Akash Agarwal from the Agra Graduate constituency and Sanjayan Tripathi from the Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teacher constituency.
The SP had earlier named Shashank Yadav from Agra and Kamlesh Yadav from Gorakhpur-Faizabad.
Sanjayan Tripathi had earlier sought a BJP ticket from the Gorakhpur-Faizabad seat. However, the BJP fielded sitting MLC Dhruv Kumar Tripathi. Following the denial of a ticket, Sanjayan Tripathi had announced his intention to contest the election as an independent. He subsequently joined the SP and was given the party ticket. He was the runner-up in the previous election from the constituency.
Polling for 11 seats of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council will be held on October 23, while October 6 is the last date for filing nominations.
Speaking to reporters, Akhilesh Yadav said the Samajwadi Party-led INDIA alliance had defeated the BJP in Uttar Pradesh in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
He also asserted that the BJP would face the combined strength of the PDA in the state.
"The Samajwadi Party's PDA is filled with love, compassion and a sense of belonging. The Samajwadi Party stands with the grieving, the oppressed and the humiliated. The BJP has insulted, exploited and betrayed every segment of society," he alleged.
Yadav said the younger generation, including Gen Z, are facing a shortage of jobs and employment opportunities, and claimed that unemployment is rising.
"The new generation is angry with the BJP and it is destined to be wiped out in Uttar Pradesh," he said.
Yadav also claimed that the BJP could not compete with the development work carried out by the Samajwadi Party government.
