SP is curse for UP, brings destruction whenever it comes to power: CM Yogi

Gonda, Nov 2 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday launched a scathing attack on the Samajwadi Party (SP), accusing it of promoting lawlessness, obstructing religious traditions and hampering development whenever it was in power.
“Samajwadi Party itself is a curse for Uttar Pradesh. Whenever it has come to power, it has brought destruction. During the SP regime, disputes arose over Durga Puja pandals, permission to worship was denied and the Kanwar Yatra was obstructed. Today, Uttar Pradesh is free from curfews and riots. BJP stands for respecting faith, while SP and Congress stand for crime. They bring criminals; we bring change,” the Chief Minister said.
He was addressing a public meeting in Gonda during the inauguration and foundation stone-laying ceremony of 69 development projects worth more than Rs 520 crore.
The Chief Minister announced that the tenth edition of Deepotsav would be celebrated in Ayodhya on November 7, adding that the light of the festival would extend beyond the holy city through development initiatives across Gonda and the entire Devipatan division.
“Deepotsav will be celebrated in Ayodhya, but its light, in the form of development, will reach Gonda and the entire Devipatan division. The transformation visible in Gonda is the result of this very change,” he said.
Targeting the previous SP government over restrictions on religious celebrations, Yogi alleged that several Durga Puja pandals in the Devipatan division had faced disputes and devotees were denied permission to organise.
He said that 67,000 Durga idols were installed across the state during the recent Navratri celebrations. He added that he had instructed officials in the Gonda division to ensure that people did not face unnecessary restrictions in installing idols at their homes.
Mentioning the Kanwar Yatra, the Chief Minister alleged that the previous SP government had created obstacles to its passage through western Uttar Pradesh on the pretext of preventing communal disturbances.
“This year, 4.5 crore devotees participated in the Kanwar Yatra between Ghaziabad and Haridwar, and the entire event passed peacefully. Navratri celebrations also remained peaceful across the state. Today, there is enthusiasm, excitement and prosperity everywhere. Uttar Pradesh is free from curfews and riots,” he said.
Recalling the events of November 2, 1990, during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, Yogi accused the then SP government of ordering police firing on Ram devotees in Ayodhya.
He contrasted the incident with the BJP government's approach, saying that the construction of the Ram Temple has been facilitated and devotees were welcomed with flowers. He added that the development of Ayodhya was also benefiting neighbouring districts, including Gonda.
Highlighting the transformation of Gonda over the past decade, the Chief Minister said that travelling from Gonda to Maa Pateshwari Shaktipeeth in Devipatan once took nearly two-and-a-half to three hours due to poor road conditions.
He alleged that the district had earlier suffered from poor infrastructure, insecurity, unemployment and inadequate development. Gonda, Balrampur and Shravasti, he said, were once counted among the country's most backward districts. He also recalled that Gonda figured among the dirtiest cities in the 2016 Swachh Survekshan.
Describing the historical and cultural significance of the region, Yogi referred to Maharaja Suheldev, Maharaja Devi Baksh Singh, Maharishi Patanjali and Goswami Tulsidas. He said the land associated with their legacy had suffered neglect due to the absence of development.
The Chief Minister also criticised previous governments over reports of children dying from unidentified diseases in Gonda, Balrampur and Bahraich, alleging that the poor and their families had been neglected.
He said that projects worth more than Rs 16,000 crore has been approved for Gonda district over the past nine-and-a-half years, while projects worth approximately Rs 50,000 crore had been approved for the entire Devipatan division.
Referring to investment opportunities, he said Gonda had received investment proposals worth Rs 3,000 crore during the 2023 UP Investors Summit. Several projects worth hundreds of crores had already been implemented, while work on others was progressing.
He added that the government is promoting compressed biogas and ethanol production, creating opportunities for farmers to earn additional income from agricultural residue and cow dung.
On healthcare and education, Yogi said a medical college named after Maharaja Devi Baksh Singh has been established in Gonda, while another named after Maharaja Suheldev has been constructed in Bahraich. The medical college named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Balrampur is nearing completion.
He also highlighted the proposed university in the Devipatan division, saying it would expand access to quality higher education and provide young people with better opportunities.
The Chief Minister said development is no longer confined to Saifai, as he alleged was the case under previous governments. Instead, development projects are being implemented across all 75 districts, 350 tehsils, 825 development blocks and 762 urban local bodies of Uttar Pradesh.
He said electricity, ration, LPG connections and welfare schemes are being provided without discrimination. He also announced that poor families would receive one filled LPG cylinder free of cost before Diwali.
On healthcare, he highlighted the benefits of the Ayushman Bharat scheme and the Chief Minister's Relief Fund, saying poor families could now access financial assistance for medical treatment.
Emphasising employment generation, Yogi said the government's objective is to create opportunities within Gonda so that young people would not have to migrate to Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai or Delhi in search of jobs.
He said an action plan has been prepared to distribute appointment letters to one lakh young people over the next six months. Appointment letters have already been issued to 12,000 to 15,000 candidates, while recruitment of 4,500 sub-inspectors was scheduled for the week.
He further announced that appointment letters for 35,000 police constables would be issued immediately after Diwali, followed by recruitment of 42,000 Home Guards. Recruitment for another 25,000 to 30,000 posts across education and other government departments was also being expedited.
The Chief Minister said sportspersons who win medals at the Olympic Games, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games were being directly appointed as Deputy Superintendents of Police and in other government departments.
He also announced 20 per cent reservation for Agniveers completing four years of service in the state police, PAC, Home Guards, Forest Department, Prisons and other government departments, with provisions for direct recruitment.
