Akhilesh taunts BJP over UCC, says ‘First fulfil old promises, then implement UCC’

Lucknow, Sep 15 (UNI) Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday took a swipe at the BJP over the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), saying the government should first fulfil its earlier election promises before raising new issues.
In a statement posted on social media, Yadav said people were beginning to view the BJP's push for the UCC as an “underground communal conspiracy” aimed at diverting attention from issues affecting their daily lives.
Referring to the BJP's past promises, he said the government should first deliver on commitments such as transferring Rs 15 lakh into people's bank accounts and creating two crore jobs.
“First fulfil past promises, then implement UCC later. Don't come up with new slogans and mislead the public,” Yadav said.
He also questioned the BJP's slogan of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas”, saying the government should demonstrate these claims through its work on the ground.
Yadav said the government should instead focus on preventing schools from shutting down, ensuring the safety of women and girls, protecting women's dignity and providing employment opportunities to the youth.
He reiterated "bring UCC later."The SP chief alleged that issues such as the UCC were being raised to divert public attention from concerns including unemployment, inflation, education,women's safety, and other fundamental issues.
The UCC, which seeks to provide a common set of personal laws governing matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption irrespective of religion, has emerged as a politically sensitive issue ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
