Uttarakhand: CM defends ECI over SIR controversy, accuses opposition of misleading public

Dehradun, Sep 27 (UNI) Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami today came to defence of Election Commission of India (ECI) amidst ongoing controversy over Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and alleged that opposition is trying to create confusion and mislead public over revision of electoral rolls despite the ECI working within its legal and constitutional authority. Without naming anyone, Dhami said, "Leader of a political party is trying to create confusion and mislead the people on the issue of Election Commission of India's SIR exercise. This is not the first time. Whenever he tries to create a narrative it's proven false. This also exposes his lies of narratives. Indian democracy is very strong and constitutional bodies are the base of ifs strength. Election Commission, too, is a constitutional body. Raising questions against it is not a big deal. Everyone has a right to question. However these questions and allegations must be based on facts, institutional records and truth."

Speaking to the media, Dhami stated that joint press conference held by the Chief Election Commissioner of India and two other members of the ECI on September 26, can also be termed as meeting of entire commission. He said, "Note issued by ECI after the press meet carried unanimous acceptance by all the members. They have made it clear that SIR order issued on June 24, 2025 was done unanimously by all three members. Thereafter SIR's time schedule released for 19 states and union Territories was also a unanimous decision of the commission."

Uttarakhand CM further stated that it will be inappropriate on the part of opposition to present an internal remark or objection, made within the commission, as differences among its members.
"A newspaper reported about 14 objections raised by two election commissioners over administrative and procedural works on SIR. On the other hand Election Commission had clarified that SIR and its time schedule orders were its unanimous decisions. Now these two facts must be seen and inferred with the legal sanctity granted by Supreme Court of India to the process of SIR in its judgement on May 27, 2026. Supreme Court has accepted the process of SIR as legal authority of the election commission" claimed Dhami.
He further said that SC found the SIR procedure adopted in Bihar justified under Representation of People's Act and Article 324 of the Constitution of India.
"The Supreme Court also accepted that enough procedural safeguards were ingrained to check arbitral exclusions in the SIR process. The court has given it clear verdict on the legality and power of the the commission over SIR," he said.
Dhami further stated that ECI had also made its position clear on the repeatedly talked about letter written to the Cabinet secretary by its members on SIR.
"According to the Commission that letter was not pertaining to any policy matter or SIR. Rather, it was about administrative subject concerning an official who was on deputation," said the Chief Minister.
According to Dhami, the Commission had denied implementation of work redistribution order as reported in the newspaper report.
As to Form 6 controversy pertaining to addition of new electorates in the electoral rolls, Dhami said that Commision in its statement on 26 September said that it has Supreme Court's mandate for declaration over the form.
