Kumari Selja calls for massive turnout at Nov 1 Delhi rally to defend democracy, constitution

Sirsa, Oct 27 (UNI) AICC General Secretary Kumari Selja, MP, on Monday called for a strong public mobilisation at the November 1 rally at Delhi’s historic Ramlila Maidan, saying the protection of voting rights, electoral transparency and constitutional values is essential to safeguarding democracy.
She expressed confidence that lakhs of people from Haryana, Uttarakhand and other parts of the country were expected to attend the rally, which will be held under the leadership of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. The Congress, she said, was committed to defending citizens’ right to vote and ensuring public confidence in the electoral process.
Alleging that the BJP was uncomfortable with the voice of the Opposition, Selja said democratic traditions required the ruling party to respect dissent and allow the Opposition to question government policies. She accused the Modi government of suppressing political opposition and said reactions from BJP leaders to the proposed rally reflected its unease over the issues being raised by the Congress.
Referring to Rahul Gandhi’s questions over alleged vote theft and the fairness of elections, Selja said the concerns required clear, impartial and transparent answers. Public trust in the electoral system, she said, was fundamental to a strong democracy.
Selja alleged that the BJP was pursuing divisive politics and urged the government to address pressing public concerns, including unemployment, inflation, farmers’ problems and the impartial functioning of democratic institutions, instead of diverting attention from them.
