Local BJP leadership against statehood restoration, Omar alleges; says resolution not anti-national

Srinagar, Sep 25 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday alleged that the local BJP leadership was opposed to the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, saying the party’s objection to the resolution moved in the Legislative Assembly was an attempt to avoid voting on the issue.
Addressing a presser after moving the resolution on restoration of statehood, Omar said the measure was confined to the restoration of statehood and did not seek to reopen earlier resolutions passed by the House on issues including autonomy.
He said the earlier resolutions remained “the property of the House” and that the latest resolution had been brought separately to seek the restoration of full statehood and convey the Assembly’s position to the Government of India.
Omar also rejected the BJP’s description of the resolution as “anti-national”, asking how a demand for restoration of statehood could be considered anti-national.
“What is anti-national about this?” he asked, maintaining that the resolution contained nothing unconstitutional and simply sought complete statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.
The Chief Minister said the reference to earlier resolutions in the latest measure was made only to clarify that the new resolution was in addition to them and did not seek to replace or dilute them.
“If the BJP wants those resolutions to be replaced, they should bring a resolution,” Omar said, adding that the matter could then be decided through a vote in the House.
Omar alleged that the BJP’s 29 MLAs were not prepared to vote on the statehood resolution and said the party’s objections were being used as an excuse to avoid taking a position on the issue.
He challenged BJP legislators to participate in the debate and make their position clear through their speeches and votes.
“If they are in favour of statehood, then say yes. If they are against statehood, then say no. People will know,” he said.
He said the issue of statehood was not about any particular government, political party or individual but concerned the entire Jammu and Kashmir.
“Statehood is not about the government. Statehood is not about my family. Statehood is not about a political party or an individual. Statehood is about the entire Jammu and Kashmir,” Omar said.
When asked that J&K Cabinet had already sent a resolution on statehood restoration, he said the legislature represented a wider spectrum of political opinion than the Cabinet, which represents the ruling side.
Omar said nearly two years had passed since the Assembly elections and reiterated that the purpose of the resolution was to carry the voice of the elected Jammu and Kashmir Assembly to New Delhi.
He also referred to the BJP’s election campaign and manifesto, alleging that statehood had been a major promise made by the party and questioning its present opposition to the resolution.
The BJP has objected to the reference to the earlier autonomy resolution, while maintaining its own position on the statehood issue. Omar, however, said the latest resolution did not seek a fresh vote on autonomy or Article 370, but was specifically aimed at restoration of full statehood.
Earlier, Chief Minister moved a resolution for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. This led to a major pandemonium in the House.
"In addition to the Resolutions passed by this House on 26th June 2000 and 6th November 2024, this House calls upon the Government of India for the immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and resolves that this Resolution be forwarded to the Government of India," reads the resolution moved by the Chief Minister.
