IIT-BHU develops new technology to combat bacteria

Varanasi, Oct 9 (UNI) Two research groups at the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) have developed a new light-based technology to combat bacterial infections.
This green light-activated technology has been found to be effective in inhibiting bacterial growth and destroying the protective layer that spreads infection. The research has been published in the prestigious international journal "Communications Chemistry."
The study, led by Dr. Samya Banerjee, Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry, and Dr. Sudip Mukherjee of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, developed three unique osmium-based chemical compounds. These are called photo-activated metal-based antibacterial compounds. When exposed to green light, they produce reactive oxygen molecules that damage bacterial cells.
